Death of a cow

Yesterday Victor's cow gave birth to 'paduk', a lovely brown calf. Today, 24.01.2009, she died. I woke up to Victor Hugo Gomes's enthused bellows early yesterday morning, "Hay Charu,Our cow has given birth to a beautiful female calf!" Later I saw her, 'Paduk', and indeed she is a beauty. Paduk can not quite stand up but wants to run. She stumbles, she falls... Then I saw her momma. White jersey with black patches. She was chewing on everything that was given to her. That was in the morning. Around 4 pm she sat down. She could not get up. Victor's vet said that she had no calcium in her and suggested a 100 ml osteo-calcium dose. I bought it in a pharmacy in the evening and gave it to her-half a bottle of 200ml with a syringe. That was at about 10 pm. yesterday. This morning I asked Victor how she was. Victor said that the cow had not gotten up. He had already called vet Bhandari and Agustin. They would be coming, 'but do me a favour Charu, please buy *** forte 4 /mg." he said. I went to the pharmacy. By the time I returned there were vets and guilty caretakers and the cow was there, just as it was yesterday. The vet was administering her some fluid through her veins. The drip went on for a bit and then I saw that the cow was beginning to breathe through her mouth. I asked Agustin what it was and he kind of made a sign that said it all. He was giving up on her. Soon the drip was removed., the neck straightened and rested on the ground. Minute after that the cow began emitting green fluid through her nose and hind quarters. I glanced at her tummy to see if the animal was still breathing. It wasn't. I looked at Victor. He was serious, looking in distance. I went to him and told him that I was sorry. "This is the price I have paid for the museum!" he said. I turned to look at Paduk. The one day old calf was practicing her walk. Little did she know that she had just lost her mother. She was putting all her energies into one thing that matters: To stand on your own feet!
